Assim, a polarização política entre facções ou partidos rivais é uma das características da política do Rio Grande do Sul. It analyzes the political polarization in Rio Grande do Sul, initially structured, on political factions, then on biparty politics and finally on multiparty politics. The latter came about by the formation of by blocs of ideologically similar parties. This polarization initially happened between liberals and caramurus (PL and PC), then between federalists and republicans (PF and PRR), later between PSD/UDN and PTB and, finally, between PMDB and PT. The polarization has, simultaneously, a circular and linear form. Its longevity comes from a process of structuring, breakdown, restructuring, reordering and consolidation, and so on successively. Therefore, it changes in order to continue on. It's vitality is based upon a structural factor - that which is permanent - and a contextual factor - that which is changes from time to time.
