Hastings era engenheiro e dirigiu-se ao Brasil em 1883, pela firma Ross e Mathews, a fim de realizar pesquisas para a Estrada de Ferro Central Minas. De volta à Inglaterra, retirou-se de suas atividades profissionais, passando à dedicar-se a seus interesses científicos e religiosos. Empreendeu um grande número de viagens, colhendo bastante material. Foi membro da Royal Geographical Society, e publicou trabalhos de cunho religioso e científico. A presente obra é o diário da viagem de Hastings ao Brasil, iniciada em 1883, focando principalmente Minas Gerais. Contém muita informação científica e geral, com notas sobre animais, aves, insetos, e plantas. Além de coligiu dados meteorológicos e registrou informações geológicas.
