Resumo: Does the amount of campaign funding vary according to the political resources of a candidate? In this paper, we answer this question and evaluate the extent in which receiving more donations enables the electoral success of high level candidates who run for Congress in Brazil. We classify the candidates into three categories of political capital (high, medium and low) to test the argument that campaign donors invest their resources in capable candidates to ensure representation of their demands. The main results indicate that high level candidates receive greater donations than medium and low level candidates. Besides that, high level candidates are more likely to win elections when compared to their medium and low level opponents. The results suggest that private donors direct their campaign investments to candidates that, when elected, are capable of influencing the key decision-making arenas. To sum it up, in the Brazilian case, neither choosing to which candidate one must donate, nor the winners of the elections are events that result from random and uncoordinated processes.
